Summer Fun at the Highlands

Sunday Kansas City Star
Breen Development

Fourth of July celebrations couldn’t get any better than at the Highlands of Weatherby. Families gather on the large 1/2 to 1 acre lots for the familiar 4th of July festivities while kids keep cool in the beautiful pool and cabana area. It just doesn’t’ get much better than this.

“The Highlands of Weatherby has truly become a vibrant neighborhood.” says Susan Silvy, project manager for the Highlands. “The developers felt that it was important to put in the pool in the early stages of the development and not wait until the Homeowners Association could afford to build it. The pool really brings the Highlands families together and creates that community feeling.”

Three spec homes are immeditely available at Highlands of Weatherby. The community, near the Zona Rosa entertainment district, features one-half to 1 acre lots.

The Highlands of Weatherby, a boutique, 71 home subdivision located just west of Zona Rosa has continued to thrive in an otherwise bleak housing market. "The success of the Highlands during this difficult market has proven to us that our basic business philosophy is working." says Buschardt. "The developer, the builders and the agents all take ownership in building the Highlands into a superior family neighborhood and that makes for a stronger product. Having exclusive builders on our project assures quality and keeps the standard high. Our build job rate remained steady through this downturn of the market and those buyers are the ones who have done their research and are investment savvy."

Three luxury spec homes on gorgeous lots are available for immediate occupancy, a 2 story, reverse 1 1/2 story and a 1 1/2 story. The Highlands has sold several homes this year and has contracts for 3 custom build jobs. Because of the increased activity the sales team believes that the spec homes will not be on the market for long. "We sold the home that our sales office was in and had to decide where the office should move to." says Buschardt. "We truly believe these last three homes will not be on the market for long and decided to create a temporary office at the pool house instead of having to go to the expense of moving the office again in a few weeks. So poor us, we will be spending the summer at the pool!"

Why does it seem that the Highlands of Weatherby has not been effected by the tough real estate market? "I think there is a combination of things that really come together here at the Highlands." explains Aylcia Alley, Reece & Nichols agent for the Highlands. "We have large1/2 to 1 acre size lots, a community pool, lots of community common ground and it's absolutely close to anything you want to do! You just can't find this combination of privacy and convenience anywhere else." The Highlands is only 10 minutes south of KCI airport, 20 minutes from downtown Kansas City, 5 minutes from Zona Rosa and only 15 minutes to the Legends. "We receive a lot of compliments on the vitality of the Highlands." says Buschardt. "We've had 20 homes go up in the last year and a half, the pool opened last summer and we don't have a lot of spec home inventory left. Buyers are realizing that the opportunity to build a custom home on a large, private lot, so centrally located is not going to exist in the future because of the high growth area we are in." The Highlands is located in a pocket of unincorporated Platte County just outside of the Kansas City limits, helping to manage development costs so that larger lots could be offered to buyers.

The Highlands of Weatherby is located just 5 minutes west of Zona Rosa on Barry Road. Take I-29 to B Barry Road, head west on Barry and turn left (south) onto Childress. Homes start in the mid $400,000's and go to $800,000. For information contact Carter Buschardt at (816)304-5525.
